David Warner is unlikely to play Australia's limited-overs series against the West Indies in the T20 league in the United Arab Emirates. Not playing for the national team in an overseas league is quite significant for an Australian cricketer like Warner, according to ESPNcricinfo.
Australia is scheduled to play three Tests and T20 against the Caribbean between February 2 and 13. The International League T20 (IL T20) will be held in the UAE from January 20 to February 18. Warner has a contract with Dubai Capitals in that league.
Warner will retire from this edition with the third and final Test of the series against Pakistan. After that, the left-handed opening batsman is scheduled to play for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League. However, it is not certain whether they will get Warner in the Thunder League phase.
Warner will apply to Cricket Australia for a no-objection letter (NOC) to play in the IL T20, Australian Cricketers' Association chief executive Todd Greenberg said. Asked if Warner will miss any cricket on home soil, he told SEN Radio, "I think the short answer is yes." I know he is determined to play in the Big Bash.'
Greenberg, who is in favor of Warner's decision, affirms, "There is no doubt that Dave will see himself in the next phase of his life—where he will get the best return on his investment." I don't think there is anything wrong with that, I would rather encourage him to do so.'
Greenberg then added, 'There will come a time when he will definitely want to miss certain matches and tours. This is what we have in mind. One may not like such a thing. But such is the modern world we live in and we have to accept it.'
Warner, who is set to retire from Tests with the series against Pakistan, has expressed his hope of playing in the 2024 World T20. However, he did not confirm exactly how many days he will play in ODIs. However, it can be said that Warner, who turned 37 last October, will not be present at the next World Cup in 2027.
Warner, however, has already said that he will not be on Cricket Australia's central contract next year. During the last World Cup, he said, 'I will not take (the offer of) a central contract, absolutely not. Cricket Australia's system is, if you play five T20s or ODIs or three Tests - then you improve and then you have to accept the terms of the contract and the sponsorship.'
Meanwhile, Cricinfo reported that Cricket Australia has already planned that Warner and other senior cricketers will not play against the West Indies. However, they want to play a full strength team in the T20 series starting from February 21 on the tour of New Zealand. T20 World Cup will be held in the USA and West Indies next June.
