The country has acknowledged the attack on a Russian warship in the port of Feodosia on the Crimean peninsula. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the matter on Tuesday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Peskov said, "Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu informed the President about the Ukrainian attack in Feodosia and the damage to one of our large "landing ships". He has highlighted the details.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force said it had destroyed a Russian naval vessel near the Crimean Peninsula. They believe that the ship was carrying drones for use against Ukraine. These drones are also believed to have come from Iran.
The Air Force of Ukraine said in a post on the social media Telegram that the attack was carried out at around 2:30 pm local time on Monday. A Russian Black Sea Fleet ship was attacked by a cruise missile in the Feodosia area.
The main Russian naval base in Crimea is in Feodosia. In an earlier message, the Ukrainian Air Force said that the Novocherkassk warship had been destroyed. The message said the ship was carrying drones provided by Iran for use against Ukraine. Russia usually uses these drones against Ukraine.
Ukrainian Air Force Commandant Mykola Olechchuk posted a video of the explosion at the Russian naval base in Feodosia.
Crimea's head of administration, Sergei Aksyonov, said the enemy had attacked Feodosia. The port area has been cordoned off. The explosion has stopped and the fire is under control, Aksyonov said.
Ukraine has often attacked the Russian navy. In April last year, Ukraine sank the missile warship Moskva.
