President Donald Trump has ordered the military to resume the delivery of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, reversing a freeze imposed by former President Joe Biden. A White House source confirmed the decision on Saturday.
Biden had previously halted the supply, citing concerns that the weapons could be used against civilians, particularly in Rafah, Gaza, amid the ongoing conflict. The decision was part of broader concerns over the humanitarian impact of Israel’s military actions in the region.
Trump, in a statement on Truth Social, said, "Many things that Israel wanted, paid for, but Biden did not deliver. They are now on their way." He did not provide further details about the move.
Both Biden and Trump have maintained strong support for Israel, a key U.S. ally. However, the U.S. has faced criticism from human rights organizations over the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza, including allegations of human rights abuses. Pro-Palestinian groups have called for a U.S. arms embargo on Israel, though these demands have not gained traction in Washington.
A ceasefire has been in place in Gaza since Trump began his second term on January 20. The agreement includes the phased release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, in exchange for Israel freeing Palestinian prisoners.
Trump has previously warned of severe consequences if Hamas did not release hostages held in Gaza, stating there would be a "price in hell" for their continued captivity.
The U.S. has also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Israel against threats from Iran-backed groups, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen.
