Denmark has expressed willingness to engage in discussions with the United States regarding the Arctic region, including Greenland. The announcement came after Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen held a 20-minute phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday.
The Danish Foreign Ministry described the talks as constructive, covering topics such as Ukraine, European security, and the Middle East. While the Arctic region was not initially on the agenda, the two sides agreed to address it, including the future of Greenland.
President Donald Trump has long shown interest in acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish control. His interest began before taking office and continued into his presidency. Trump has not ruled out the possibility of using military or economic measures to influence Denmark regarding Greenland.
In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede has reaffirmed that Greenland is not for sale and emphasized the territory’s desire for independence. Trump had previously floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, sparking significant international attention.
As discussions move forward, Denmark’s decision to address the issue marks a significant step in the ongoing geopolitical dialogue surrounding the Arctic and Greenland's strategic importance.
