Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit filed five years ago alleging that its virtual assistant Siri secretly listens to users. The company filed a preliminary injunction in a California federal court on Tuesday.
The lawsuit denies the allegations that Siri secretly listens to users' private conversations, but Apple has agreed to settle the lawsuit.
According to the application for settlement of the case, Apple will create a fund of $95 million for Siri users. From this fund, the affected Siri users will be compensated with 20 dollars each.
Not only that but to settle the case, Apple will have to delete all the conversation data collected through Siri. The opinions of users will also be given more importance while collecting voice data through Siri.
The lawsuit, filed five years ago, alleges that Apple's virtual assistant Siri can secretly listen to the private conversations of iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch users. Not only that but the information stored by Siri is likely provided to various third-party companies. Apple has denied these allegations from the beginning.
Earlier in 2023, Amazon agreed to pay $30 million to settle a similar lawsuit alleging privacy violations by its Ring doorbell camera and digital assistant Alexa.
