A senior Russian military officer general has been killed by bomb explosion in Moscow, investigators said Tuesday. An explosive device hidden on a scooter exploded outside a building.

The deceased was identified as Igor Kirillov, commander of the Russian Armed Forces' chemical, biological and radiation defense forces. His assistant was also killed in the explosion. The two men were leaving a building in southeast Moscow early this morning when the explosion occurred.

The Russian Investigative Committee said an explosive device attached to a scooter parked near the entrance to a residential building on Ryazansky Avenue in Moscow exploded on the morning of December 17.

Photos published in Russian media showed the explosion shattering several windows and severely damaging the main door.

Igor Kirillov, who was killed in the incident, had been serving as commander of the Chemical, Biological and Radiation Defense Forces since 2017. The UK imposed sanctions on him last October for the alleged use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.
