Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has also entered into electric vehicle (EV) production. They have unveiled a model of an electric car for the first time. Xiaomi officials said they plan to become the world's top five electric car manufacturers in the next 15 to 20 years.
The news agency Reuters reported this information in a report on Thursday. According to the report, the new model of Xiaomi's electric car will be unveiled but it will take a few more months before the car goes on sale in the market. But they are bringing the car to the market at a time when China, the world's largest car market, is ramping up production but demand is falling due to a price war.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said their electric car has 'super electric motor' technology, capable of delivering speeds faster than Tesla and Porsche's EVs. He further said, 'With hard work in the next 15 to 20 years, we want to become one of the top five EV manufacturers in the world. I will try to introduce China's automobile industry to the world market.
Xiaomi's electric car model is named SU Seven. This model will come in two versions. A single charge can run up to 668 kilometers (415 miles). The other will run up to 800 km. However, the price of this Xiaomi EV has not been announced.
According to a Reuters report, the SU7 car is expected to attract customers due to its operating system which is compatible with Xiaomi's popular phones and other electronic devices. Car drivers can use Xiaomi's mobile apps seamlessly.
Xiaomi first announced its intention to produce electric cars in March 2021. In September of that year they registered the business to manufacture electric cars.
According to Reuters, Xiaomi's new business unit to manufacture electric vehicles is called 'Xiaomi EV Inc'. At the time of registration, the authorized capital was 1 trillion yuan in Chinese currency, and Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun was named as the legal representative.
