A senior official close to ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been publicly executed by the country's current rebel-held administration, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday.
According to the monitoring group, the official who was executed was named Mazen Keneh. He was accused of spying for the Bashar government.
The Damascus authorities said yesterday morning that Mazen was one of the most prominent loyalists of the previous regime. He was shot in the head in public on the streets of Damascus.
He was accused of issuing malicious security reports, which led to the execution and imprisonment of many people.
The current Syrian government has recently launched a crackdown on leaders from the Bashar era.
The Syrian's new intelligence chief, Anas Khattab, has said that the country's security situation is being overhauled.
