Plane crash in South Korea, death toll rises to 174

A passenger plane crashed on the runway while landing at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea, killing at least 174 people. The accident occurred on Sunday morning.

The death toll, citing a local fire department in South Korea. The fire department said in a statement that "so far, two people have been rescued alive."

The Jeju Air flight was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members when it crashed while landing at Muan International Airport after arriving from Thailand.

The country's Yonhap news agency also reported that two people were initially rescued alive. Rescue operations are ongoing. There are fears that the number of casualties could rise.

An airport official told Reuters that authorities were conducting rescue operations in the rear of the crashed plane.

Pictures published in local media showed flames and smoke billowing from various parts of the crashed plane.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok, who took over as the country's interim leader on Friday, has ordered the rescue operation to be carried out properly, his office said, amid recent political turmoil.
