The US Navy said it accidentally shot down from warship and one of its warplanes over the Red Sea, Sunday.

There were two pilots in the fighter jet. Both pilots ejected from the fighter jet when it was shot down.

The US military's Central Command said in a statement that two pilots were rescued after an apparent friendly fire incident. One of them suffered minor injuries.

According to Central Command, the downed F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet belonged to the US Navy. The fighter jet took off from the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.

The Central Command statement said that the guided-missile cruiser Gettysburg, which was part of the Harry S. Truman's escort, accidentally fired a missile, which hit the warplane.

The Red Sea has been the center of various military activities for more than a year.

Israel launched an indiscriminate attack on Gaza, Palestine, on October 7, 2023. In response, Yemen's pro-Iranian Houthi rebels, in support of the Gaza-based Palestinian independence armed group Hamas, have been attacking ships sailing through the Red Sea. The US military is active in the region to counter the Houthi rebels.

The US military said it carried out strikes on Houthi drones and missiles over the Red Sea on Saturday. It also struck a Houthi command-and-control facility in Sanaa, Yemen. It also struck a Houthi missile depot.
