Before entering politics, Manmohan Singh was a prominent Indian economist and the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India's central bank.
Local media reported that Manmohan Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital in New Delhi around 8:30 pm on Thursday in a critical condition. He died there that night.
Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister in the government of former Indian Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao (1991-96). From then on, he became a familiar face in the country's politics. During his tenure as Finance Minister, Manmohan Singh made some important reforms in the Indian economy. Through this, the country's economy took a new path.
Manmohan Singh served two consecutive terms as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the country's parliament, until the beginning of this year. He retired from the Rajya Sabha last April.
Veteran Congress leader Manmohan Singh served as India's Prime Minister for two terms. He previously served as Finance Minister. He is credited with reforming India's economy.
